Does every team decision need the whole team?

Sometimes a decision benefits from broad participation. Sometimes the right approach is to seek targeted advice and leave one accountable person to decide. In other situations, a representative group or the full team may need genuine decision authority.

I am inviting team leaders, managers, facilitators and team members to try Decision Fit, a free decision-support tool developed as part of my Master of Technological Futures research.

What is in it for you?

Bring a real workplace decision and use the tool to:

• clarify who needs to contribute, advise or decide;
• identify whether important expertise or affected voices may be missing;
• reduce unnecessary meetings, consultation and decision delay;
• consider whether the decision needs wider commitment to be implemented;
• surface risks involving accountability, legitimacy, culture or team wellbeing;
• receive a practical recommendation that you can discuss and test with your team.

The tool does not make the decision for you. It helps you examine the context and determine the minimum sufficient level of participation needed for the decision to be informed, responsible and implementable.

After applying the recommendation, you can return and share whether the decision process affected productivity—including speed, clarity, team effort, commitment and rework. Your experience will contribute to practical research into when different ways of making decisions help or hinder team productivity.
